In 1999, Vehicles for Change opened outside of Baltimore, Maryland. After building sustainable car award and automotive training programs in the Maryland-Virginia-Washington D.C. region, VFC began work to replicate those programs nationally, aiming to bring independent transportation and training in the automotive field to as many people as possible.

    • Goodwill Industries operates the Wheels to Work program, which provides affordable, reliable transportation solutions for low-income individuals. They offer vehicle repair services and access to affordable used cars to help individuals maintain reliable transportation.
  2. Community Action Agencies:
    • Community Action Agencies (CAAs) are local organizations that offer various services to low-income individuals and families, including transportation assistance. Some CAAs provide auto repair programs or partnerships with local mechanics to offer discounted or subsidized repairs.
  3. YMCA’s Transportation Programs:
    • Some YMCA branches provide transportation assistance programs, including vehicle repair and maintenance services, to help individuals and families in need access reliable transportation.
  4. Pampered Auto Care:

    You are a busy person, and you can’t always wait around for your car to be repaired. Our loaner car program is designed for people who need a vehicle while theirs is in our shop being repaired. All of our loaner cars are in excellent shape with automatic transmissions and air conditioning. We’ll make sure you get where you need to go while we pamper your car.

  5. SparkHope Automotive (SHIFT Program):  This 3-year program provides long-term vehicle stability for single mothers by covering automotive diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs at 50% of the retail cost. They have removed strict pay stub requirements to make applying easier.

    • Many vocational training programs or technical schools have auto repair programs where students, under the supervision of experienced instructors, offer low-cost or discounted repairs to the community.
