There’s something beautiful about the beginning of a new school year.
Fresh notebooks. Newly sharpened pencils. Hallways waiting to be filled with laughter. Parents capturing first-day photos. Students wondering what this year will bring.
And somewhere, before the first bell rings, a teacher is standing in a classroom—straightening desks, hanging one last bulletin board, reviewing lesson plans, and quietly hoping every child who walks through that door feels welcomed, safe, and capable of great things.
If that’s you, this letter is for you.
Thank you.
Thank you for saying “yes” to a profession that asks so much of your heart.
Thank you for believing in students long before they believe in themselves.
Thank you for celebrating the small victories that often become life’s biggest turning points.
Thank you for seeing potential where others may only see challenges.
The truth is, some of the most important lessons students learn will never appear on a report card.
They’ll remember the teacher who encouraged them after they failed.
The one who noticed when they were unusually quiet.
The one who made them feel like they belonged.
The one who simply believed they could.
Years from now, they may not remember every assignment or every test, but they’ll remember how you made them feel.
That kind of impact can’t be measured.
As parents, we often celebrate our children’s milestones, but behind so many of those moments is an educator who quietly helped make them possible. Whether it’s teaching a child to read, restoring confidence after a difficult season, or inspiring dreams that once seemed impossible, teachers help shape futures every single day.
If You’re a Teacher Who’s Also Raising a Family, This Is for You
As you prepare your classroom for another school year, you’re probably doing more than organizing lesson plans and decorating bulletin boards.
You’re making sure backpacks are packed.
Planning family schedules.
Coordinating childcare.
Shopping for school supplies—not just for your students, but for your own children, too.
For many educators, the school year doesn’t begin when the first bell rings. It begins weeks earlier, as they juggle the responsibilities of preparing for two classrooms: the one at school and the one at home.
And if you’re a single mother or father, we know that balancing those two worlds can sometimes feel overwhelming.
You spend your days encouraging students to dream big, solve problems, and believe in themselves. Then you head home to help with homework, prepare dinner, manage a household, and do it all again the next morning.
It’s a calling—but it’s also a lot to carry.
So before the school year officially begins, we’d love to remind you of a few things.
Give yourself the same grace you so freely give your students.
Celebrate progress instead of striving for perfection.
Ask for help when you need it. Strength isn’t measured by how much you can carry alone.
Protect moments of rest whenever you can. Even a few quiet moments can help you reset for the day ahead.
Lean into your community. Whether it’s family, friends, your faith community, fellow educators, or organizations like Single Moms Society, you don’t have to navigate this season alone.
Most importantly, don’t forget to care for yourself while you’re caring for everyone else.
Your students need your passion.
Your family needs your presence.
And you deserve support, too.
Resources Worth Exploring This School Year
One of the greatest strengths a parent—or an educator—can have is knowing where to turn when support is needed. As another school year begins, we encourage you to take advantage of the resources available in your community.
Check your school district’s employee benefits. Many districts offer valuable programs that often go unused, including Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), confidential counseling, financial wellness resources, professional development, tuition assistance, and educator discounts.
Build your village early. Whether it’s another teacher, a trusted neighbor, family member, church community, or another parent, don’t wait until you’re overwhelmed to ask for help. Community isn’t a luxury—it’s a lifeline.
Take advantage of local family resources. Libraries, community centers, nonprofits, and school districts frequently offer free tutoring, after-school programs, parenting workshops, financial literacy classes, food assistance, school supply drives, and enrichment opportunities for children and families.
Invest in your own well-being. Read the book you’ve been putting off. Go for a walk. Schedule the doctor’s appointment. Protect your peace. You pour so much into others—you deserve to be poured into, too.
Stay connected to opportunities designed for educators. Networking events, appreciation programs, wellness workshops, and community expos can provide fresh ideas, practical resources, and meaningful encouragement throughout the school year.
That’s one reason Single Moms Society is honored to partner with the 3rd Annual Urban Educators Expo, taking place on Saturday, August 22, 2026, in Carson, California.
It’s an exciting free event that was created by founder of Transitions 2 Success , Karen Glenn to celebrate and support educators, the Expo brings together community organizations, financial wellness resources, professional development opportunities, wellness experiences, giveaways, and organizations committed to helping educators thrive—both inside and outside the classroom. Whether you’re a classroom teacher, school counselor, librarian, paraprofessional, administrator, or another dedicated education professional, it’s an opportunity to begin the school year feeling encouraged, connected, and appreciated.
Because when educators are supported, students flourish.
Families flourish.
Communities flourish.
So before the first attendance sheet is called…
Before the first homework assignment is given…
Before the first school bell rings…
We simply want to say one more thing.
Thank you.
Thank you for showing up.
Thank you for caring.
Thank you for choosing patience, even on the difficult days.
Thank you for helping children discover gifts they didn’t know they had.
And thank you for making a difference in ways you may never fully realize.
From all of us at Single Moms Society, we’re cheering you on as you begin another school year.
We hope it’s filled with purpose, meaningful connections, joyful moments, and countless reminders that the work you do matters—not just today, but for generations to come.
